Property available for sale or rent in Cyprus.

Since joining the EU in May 2004, Cyprus has experienced a property boom. Residential property is currently increasing in value at the rate of around 15% per annum.

Warning: Do not buy property in the illegally occupied north of the island. The seller is unlikely to have title to the property and as a consequence, the buyer will not have legal title either.

In a written parliamentary reply to a question from Roger Gale MP, then Minister for Europe Douglas Alexander stated:

The [British] government forewarns about the dangers of purchasing property in the occupied north of Cyprus, which originates from the non-recognised international community of the self-appointed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the ownership of Cypriots displaced in 1974.

Douglas Alexander went on to warn that any British citizen buying such property could face legal action in the Cypriot courts, or anywhere within the EU, including British courts.

Given that over 92% of property in occupied Cyprus is Greek Cypriot, Church, or Republic of Cyprus government owned, it can be safely assumed that those offering it for sale in the occupied north have no legitimate title.
